Canadian Muslims Claim Double Standard on Hate Speech
Thursday, October 05, 2006 1:22 pm
For Immediate Release
(OTTAWA, CANADA - 10/05/06) - The Canadian Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CAN) today called on Minister of Immigration Monte Solberg to clarify an apparent double standard on barring controversial foreign religious leaders from Canada.
On June 12th of this year, following the decision to deny the entry of a British Muslim speaker, CAIR-CAN sent a letter to Solberg asking the federal government to clarify regulations on freedom of speech and the entry of clerics and international speakers.
“Minister Solberg has not given Canadians the courtesy of a response as of yet”, said Karl Nickner Executive Director of CAIR-CAN.
A spokesperson for Citizenship and Immigration said "we do not welcome hate-mongers in Canada " when referring to the government's decision to bar the British Muslim leader. (no names or references…)
However, American Christian evangelist Reverend Franklin Graham is still scheduled to speak at the Central Canada Franklin Graham Festival in Winnipeg on October 20th, even after making public pronouncements that Islam is "a very evil and a very wicked religion" and that Hindus are "bound by Satan's power." (Names droppings and out of contexts quotes and also misleading…)
For more information about Graham's hateful comments, see:

None of the interest groups who called for the British Muslim to be barred from entry have spoken out about Graham's views or his visit to Canada . (Why would a Muslim group focus on what other’s
"Based on the different reactions to the comments of both religious leaders, many Canadian Muslims are wondering whether a double standard is being applied. As Canadians, we must stand firmly against hate speech." said Karl Nickner, CAIR-CAN Executive Director.
"Freedom of speech, though not an absolute, is a cherished Canadian value which cannot be selectively applied. It is troubling that our Minister of Immigration has yet to step forward in order to clarify this legislation for the benefit of all Canadians" added Karl Nickner.

A gathering of familiar faces at Brampton courthouse
From Monday's Globe and Mail
Monday, June 05, 2006
BRAMPTON — Canada's hard-line Muslims can seem a pretty tight-knit group at times. As a long line of completely new terrorism suspects were being shuffled in and out of the prisoner's box, there were many familiar faces looking on in the courtroom.
In the visitors' gallery Saturday morning sat Zaynab Khadr, the sister of Abdullah Khadr, who is fighting extradition to the United States. He is accused of supplying weapons to al-Qaeda.

MMN MESSAGE IN WAKE OF TORONTO AREA ARRESTS
Montreal Muslim News
Montreal June 5, 2006: To our dear brothers and sisters in Islam. By now you have all read about the recent arrests of 17 Toronto area Muslims who are alleged to have been planning a terrorist attack on Canadian soil. The news of these arrests have spread across the globe like wildfire. In the days and weeks ahead many distressing things will be said and written about Islam and Muslims which will cause us a lot of grief and anger. One must keep in mind that those who are pre-disposed to have hostility against our community will use this incident as a pre-text to attack us even further. This should not come as a surprise.
We advise you not to spend too much time following all these headlines as they will have a sickening effect on the heart. Rather, spend time on remembering Allah and reading the wisdom contained in the Holy Quran which will provide us comfort during these troubling times. Also, please be patient with our community leaders as they are under a lot of pressure from many sides and they are trying their best to represent us in this very difficult situation. They need and deserve our support, so please try to have confidence that they are doing the best they can under the circumstances.
Allah has promised in His holy book that we would be tested:
"Do men think that they will be left alone on saying, "We believe", and that they will not be tested? We did test those before them, and God will certainly know those who are true from those who are false. (Quran 29:2-3)
Let us not lose heart, but place our faith and trust in Allah who knows and sees all things and will be our ultimate helper in times of trouble and distress. Our ultimate security is in Allah and to Him we run for shelter and protection.

Muslim organizations question Graham crusade
Though one can only take exception at the article’s baseless speculation that PM Harper shares Franklin Graham’s views on Islam, it is nonetheless noteworthy that - contrary to Canadian Muslim advocacy groups - it rightfully differentiates between Sheikh Ryadh ul-Haq’s hate-mongering against adherents of a given faith and Graham’s negative view of Islamic beliefs.

Billy Graham's son, Franklin Graham, is due to appear in Winnipeg on October 20 at what is billed as the Central Canada Franklin Graham Festival. Two Muslim organizations have reacted negatively. One, the Muslim Canadian Congress (MCC), calls directly for his exclusion from Canada as a hatemonger. The other, the Council on American-Islamic Relations-Canada (CAIR-CAN), claims that if Graham is allowed in it would amount to a double standard, since a Muslim hatemonger, Sheikh Rihadh ul Haq, was refused entry. The MCC was part of a coalition that was successful in keeping ul Haq out.
On the face of it, the argument against Graham appears reasonable. A bigot is a bigot. However, the situation is more complex than appears at first glance. Ul Haq has attacked followers of other religions. Jews and Hindus, he charged, are those who "hate Muslims the most," and he calls on Allah to "expose the Jews for what they really are." Jews, he charged, "monopolize everything . . . money, interest, usury, the world economy, the media ..."
Franklin is different. He attacks Muslim beliefs, saying that Islam is "a very evil and wicked religion." However, he also stated that he does not believe that Muslims "are evil because of their faith." One does not have to agree with Franklin to see the difference in an attack on a religion and an attack on its adherents. Yet, the Canadian government has certainly been handed a hot potato by MCC and CAIR-CAN. An interesting angle to the issue is that many of the hard core members and supporters of the Conservative Party, which heads the minority government, share Franklin's views, quite possibly Prime Minister Stephen Harper himself, who is also an Evangelical Christian.
